Swim gleans toward the narrative of otherness existing outside of social norms. Representation of the nude who resembles a female speaks towards otherness, and black bodies in both public and private spaces, from an internal perspective portrayed outward. The woman is displayed with a snorkel as a symbolized reference to a submergence above water.
ARTIST BIO:
Chantae Elaine Wright is a multidisciplinary artist. Her multi-cultural familial history, personal narratives, and portraiture, whether in painting or photography, all influence the context of her work. She has been developing a style around figuration that begins with portraits and curated scenes from photo shoots she has done, or painting alone, but also expanding into an ardent exploration of polymorphism. She uses photographic source material as the seed for her expression, using imagery to evoke from. Not only one gets a brief glimpse into the characters’ lives, but also a reflection on histories that are divergent from societal ideologies. Her work is centered on expanding the narrative of otherness to be more inclusive of everyday lived experiences. Her studio process involves the overlapping of acrylic, oil, China marker, pastel, charcoal, spray paint, marker, and ink onto photographed canvas. Wright is currently pursing the MFA in painting at Florida International University.
